Set of Antique Leather Bound French Books - H De Balzac
This rare set of 1891 antique books are pretty to look at. If you are one that can read French, they are apparently also a very good read by Honore' De Balzac. Line your book shelves with these pretty books or stack in a vignette while staging your space.
There are 10 books. 9 are by French literary writer Honore' De Balzac. There is a single book in this collection by Alphonse Daudet. The books were owned by Charles Sears Baldwin as evidenced in the interior of each book. Purchased at an estate in CT. Most books have this owner's label in the front cover. Several books are signed by Charles Baldwin and dated July 13, 1891 Columbia College.
Born in New York City in 1867, Baldwin entered Columbia College at seventeen and received his A.B. in 1888. He was one of the earliest students to be granted the Ph.D. degree in English at Columbia. Besides teaching at Yale (1895–1911), Baldwin also worked at Barnard College and Columbia University. Baldwin was also a writer.
The books are all partially leather bound and in various stages of condition. They are old and dated 1891. Entirely published in French, in Paris, by Ancienne Maison Michel Levy Freres.
Condition is as is with yellowing pages, loose pages, loose covers. Aging leather. One book has the cover entirely loose from the binding. l
